There's a worm at the bottom of the garden
22 July 2019
When my son Gabe asked me if worms had babies or laid eggs it made me think about when he was little and tried to eat them . In fact ALL my kids tried to eat them as they spent a lot of time outdoors exploring and eating insects and bugs was part of learning about nature. Worm hunts kept them occupied for hours, who'd find the most, whose were the longest and the favourite one of all which one tasted best ! It's a fond memory thinking about chubby fingers trying to grab the wiggly thing that had their attention and then the wonderful moment when they've got it and inspect it before trying to eat it . Ours girls weren't keen and we'd laugh as they scrunched up their little faces as though they were tasting a lemon the baby expression for YUK and spit them out. Gabe on the other hand was a mini Bear Grylls and just smiled through a soil covered face and licked his lips. Funny thing is he hates mushrooms now because they taste slimy. Kids, eh !
Worms are great and fascinating for kids. Long, thin, slimy ones; Short, fat, juicy ones. Ooey gooey, ooey gooey worms .
A holiday activitiy that they had great fun making were Worm jars. Kids love to see how things actually work and if you're thinking of setting up a worm farm this is a good idea to do beforehand so they can see how the worms break down food.
I've popped some links below which are helpful for making worm jars/worm farms and other holiday ideas .
Have fun and if you've got a funny photo of your kid eating a worm or something equally revolting please send it in . We'd love to see . The photo here is of Gabe on a worm hunt ...look at that tongue !
Wiggly Woo
There's a worm at the bottom of my garden,
And his name is Wiggly Woo.
There's a worm at the bottom of my garden
And all that he can do is ....
Wiggle all day
And wiggle all night,
The neighbours say he's a terrible FRIGHT!
